Listen to Darius Rucker on iHeartRadio

Darius Rucker says he feels deeply honored to be recognized with an honorary degree by his alma mater, the University of South Carolina.  The singer has also been tapped to address the students at this year's graduation ceremony, which he admits is something that took him completely by surprise.

Rucker says he's already working on his speech.  He explains that he typically only gives himself a week to prepare for this type of event, but he's putting in the extra time because he's "just so proud."

Darius is one of three honorary degree recipients who will give speeches during the two-day ceremony.  Rucker will receive an honorary doctorate in music from the school, and speak on the second day along with former U.S. Ambassador to the UK Phil Lade.

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is being recognized as well, and will speak on the first day.  The University of South Carolina's spring 2013 commencement ceremony will take place at the school in Columbia, South Carolina on May 10th and 11th.
