Dad Deliberately Crashes Car Into Restaurant To Kill Family

North Carolina police said that a man killed his daughter and daughter-in-law by driving his Jeep into a restaurant where they just sat down to have a meal with his family. Roger Self walked into Surf and Turf Lodge in Bessemer City and took a seat at a table with his wife Diane, his daughter Katelyn, his daughter-in-law Amanda, her husband Josh, their 13-year-old daughter and other family members. After they were seated, he excused himself to step outside. Roger then got into his Jeep and drove it right through the wall into the table where his family was sitting.

Brandon Wilson was on his way to check on the Selfs' table when the Jeep flew through the wall and into the table. He explained what he witnessed:

“I saw a white Jeep just fly right past my face. It was so unreal. I saw chairs and tables and cups just flying everywhere. It just sounded like a tornado.”

Amanda and Katelyn, who was a deputy with the Gaston County Sheriffs office, were both killed while Diane, Josh, and his 13-year-old daughter were all seriously injured in the intentional crash. They are all expected to recover from their injuries.

Police said Roger was taken into custody and is facing two counts of first-degree murder.

The family's pastor, Austin Rammell, told ABC11 that Self was suffering from a mental illness, saying, "This is totally opposite of who he is." He added that the entire family was at Mass just hours before the attack. "I'm just trying to encourage them," Rammell said. "This was not a conscious act by their father and they know that."

Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger released a statement asking "for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, not only for Katelyn’s family and friends, but also her brothers and sisters in uniform."

“Today we lost one of our own, Deputy Katelyn Self, in a tragic incident that occurred while she was not on duty. Katelyn has served the Sheriff’s Office for four years and was a corporal in the jail. Our hearts are broken and we ask for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, not only for Katelyn’s family and friends, but also her brothers and sisters in uniform.”
